Currently I am working on illustrations for a translation of the Bhagavad Gita with Sanskrit scholar and author Amla Sanghvi. More information regarding the publishing of this book will appear in this section later in 2010.
New work in progress also includes the five Buddhist Taras, painted in egg tempra on wooden panels in icon-style, a series of yantra representing the nine planets, and a series of small yantra on calfskin vellum, this series will be housed between two plates of glass and set in a stand to allow for display/use or tabletop. I recently finished working on a project for Saint Mary's College, Notre Dame, Indiana. My contributions to the new Spes Unica academic building included an installation piece in the entry, a series of crosses designed for a cross placed outside the entry of each classroom, a large stained glass window and leaded glass door in the Reflection/Meditation room, and a series of icon-style panels to represent the Great Religions of the World. Photos of this project can be seen on the Sacred Images Collection page.
As a founding member and board member of a new, collaborative arts organization in Idaho’s Treasure Valley, I invite you to take a moment to visit the Treasure Valley Artist’s Alliance at www.treasurevalleyartistsalliance.org and join us for events! Please consider ways in which you can support the visual arts in your own area.
PennyLea Mackie, a painter and designer for over thirty years,
has studied extensively the art, mythology and use of ancient
symbols from living masters and classic texts. For more than three
decades she has immersed herself in on-going studies of Asian
culture, and the visual/spiritual healing traditions of global
indigenous cultures. The vision PennyLea holds for her art is to
create images that enliven the experience of personal consciousness
in the viewer.
I have long been fascinated with viewing life through the lenses of pattern and energy. The resultant paintings aim to offer the individual an experience of the energetics of their own consciousness. Each painting structurally possesses the possibility of creating a coherent field of thought and subsequent action not only in the viewer, but also energetic coherence in the rooms or buildings in which they are placed. Most indigenous cultures have long held an understanding of the unseen energetics underlying all aspects of daily life, including the visual arts. Following prescribed combinations of shape, color, number and corresponding elements of nature, I have stayed true to the traditions from which these images have developed, while bringing them in to a contemporary context. Each image is designed to hold a particular energetic that offers the viewer a visual entry to an equivalent interior space.
PennyLea has shown her work internationally, being the first American to be invited to participate in the prestigious Art in Action exhibition held annually in the UK. Her work hangs in numerous public and private collections, in Temples, and has been incorporated into large-scale public architecture.
PennyLea is available for private commission and design work for residential, public, or commercial spaces.
